In my opinion, many organizations underestimate the need for external “out-of-the-box” thinkers during periods of change while it is important for organizations to acknowledge that a combination of internal and external resources is often the best recipe for achieving constructive criticism of the “status quo” during periods of change.
That is, internal resources are required as the pillar of the “status quo” to understand the existing systems whilst external resources are often in the best position to cast a “virgin eye” to that which is internally blind.
It is human nature to grow accustomed to the “status quo” to the point that one can become blinded to all alternatives such that a “virgin eye” by its nature can see areas for improvements in efficiency, effectiveness, profitability and productivity that a “status quo” eye cannot see.
That is, the “status quo” repetition and routine tends to lead to ritualistic behaviours that become sacred to the point that constructive criticism can be taken negatively as blasphemy.
Therefore, organizations must blend internal ritualistic “status quo” perspectives with external “out-of-the-box” constructive criticism to produce the most effective results during periods of change.
In simple English, internal ritualistic “status quo” perspectives must first be educated on the notion of constructive criticism that is in no way, shape or form a personal attack but rather a continuous improvement strategy.
