In my opinion, organizations need to embrace the notion that during periods of change it is critical to insure that policies and procedures are in place to remedy early symptoms of “Anxiety” generally resulting from poor stress management.
It is important for organizations to acknowledge that “Anxiety” can arise in the context of change management as an inadvertent by-product of change.
However, what is most important for an organization is to be able to identify these symptoms which are characterized by excessive rumination, worrying, uneasiness, apprehension and fear about future uncertainties either based on real or imagined events, which may affect both physical and psychological health.
Because each person has a unique chemical make up, the type, number, intensity, and frequency of anxiety symptoms will vary from person to person. For example, one person may have just one mild anxiety symptom, whereas another may have all anxiety symptoms and to great severity.
Without getting into more detail on the over 100 symptoms of anxiety, the key point to note is that there is a high probability, if not certainty, that at least one to several individuals will experience some form of anxiety during periods of change.
However, it is generally those with poor stress management techniques who will develop full fledge anxiety disorders.
In terms of stress management in order to reduce the negative effects of anxiety, we must distinguish between factors within one’s control and factors beyond one’s control.
Therefore, it is important to focus managing one’s stress by engaging in activities and behaviours which one controls as opposed to trying to control the activities and behaviours of others.
That being said, I would now like to focus on the grey areas of self-control that are encompassed by one’s finances. If one chooses to live beyond one’s means and indebt oneself to the gills, this will generally create a self-fulfilling prophecy of anxiety during periods of change because if one feels that one’s job is on the line and one won’t be able to make their bill payments on time, then one will tend to experience excessive anxiety syndrome.
To a certain extent, one’s finances are within one’s control on the premise that if one creates a cushion and sets some money aside during the good days, one will be better able to weather the storm during the bad days and thus minimize the adverse impacts of anxiety syndrome during periods of uncertainty and change.
In summary, I refer to “Change Management Gangnam THE ROCK Style” as the belief that to control over 100 possible anxiety syndromes over time, extracurricular activities combined with control of one’s finances must be behind one’s life drive.
