Change Management Fundamental Basics “Gangnam THE ROCK Style” – Part 31
Christiano will learn over time that during periods of change, organizations should promote the belief that for psychological symptoms to be cured, perceptions must change with an end to the game of blame, while recognizing the need for professional Consultants without any shame.
In my opinion, organizations need to embrace the notion that during periods of change it is critical to insure that policies and procedures are in place to remedy early symptoms of “Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)”; “Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD)”; and/ or any other co morbid disorder syndrome.
It is important for organizations to acknowledge that personality disorders can arise in the context of change management as an inadvertent by-product of change.
However, what is most important for an organization is to be able to identify these symptoms which in laymen terms can be described as an employee who behaves strangely, unusually, erratically, lunatically, illogically, irrationally, bizarrely and/ or out of the ordinary normality which cannot be explained rationally, pragmatically and logically.
The key point to note is that if the employee behaviour is not attributed to some sort of intentional, malicious, animalistic, barbaric and/ or criminal act, then by default it must be attributed to some sort of personality disorder.
At this stage, the task at hand is beyond the skill set range of the Human Resources Department who cannot solve these types of problems internally at which point external professional psychologists and psychiatrists are required to work with the traumatized individual in order to correct the damage caused by a perceived traumatic situation.
The biggest problem with curing personality disorders is that nobody wants to cross that line as if it is some sort of taboo crime.
In my opinion, this situation is no different than a police officer that suffers a bullet wound during a shootout and is put on medical leave by his or her supervisor pending a psychological evaluation by a professional. Generally, in these situations, a professional psychiatrist must sign off that the police officer is fit for active duty or alternatively develop a remediation plan to rehabilitate the police officer psychologically.
In the same way, an organization should request that an employee be reviewed and rehabilitated by professionals pursuant to potential personality disorder behaviours at the very beginning when the strange, unusual, erratic, lunatic, illogical, irrational, bizarre and/ or out of the ordinary normality behaviour occurs.
The goal of the professional psychologist and psychiatrist should be signing off on the employee’s fitness for active duty or alternatively developing a rehabilitation plan.
In my opinion, the barrier to rehabilitation is all a matter of perception as nobody wants to be perceived as “psychologically disturbed” when in actual fact they have some sort of “psychological flu” which can be remedied and cured.
In my opinion, psychological illnesses should be treated no differently than any other form of illness except that this type of illness requires a different type of professional that everybody refers to as a psychologist or psychiatrist whereas I like to refer to them as professional Consultants.
In summary, I refer to “Change Management Gangnam THE ROCK Style” as the belief that for psychological symptoms to be cured, perceptions must change with an end to the game of blame, while recognizing the need for professional Consultants without any shame.
